Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Friday, February 4, 2011

The last two days have been a well needed break.  The weather couldn't have been nicer for mid winter ice fishing.   We had very good runs in the mourning both days, that put us very close to the daily limit.  Then we made short work of the few fish that we needed in the later afternoon.   The only down side to the fishing is that the mid day bite is pretty much non-existant.  We caught 95% of our walleyes from 7:30am to 10am.  and then again from 4:30pm to 6:00pm.  It is a little hard to believe that as good as they go in the low light conditions that there isn't somewhat of a mid day bite, but after two days of drilling a couple hundred holes in 20 different spots, i think i can say it is not happening here anyway.  The fish seem to be averaging from 14 to 22 inches.  Yesterday(Feb.4), the fish seemed to be getting smaller.  We had way more fish right at 14in. than we had been bringing in.  The numbers were as good or better than ever, they were just a little smaller.  Today, we didn't see the numbers in the mourning, but the size was real good.  Tonight the fish seemed to be more like yesterdays.  We only need a couple so we went through a bunch to find the last couple 17 inchers.  Most everything has been from 18 to 30 fow. with the exception of a few stagglers during the day out in 45 to 50 fow.  We did catch some real nice catfish and perch in that deep water today.   All of our fish came jigging the last few days,  but that makes sense since we didn't put out any set lines.  Most of our efforts are still from the Moreau river north on the west shore.  Travel is still difficult and the slush seems to change by the hour.  Tracks or snowmobiles are recommended.
