Oahe Wings and Walleyes Fishing Reports Fishing Reports
Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Hey everybody, sorry I havn't posted a report for awhile, still recovering from the SD Walleye Classic. What an awesome week with great events, great people and an incredible bite that only Lake Oahe could produce. The bite that week was as good as anyone could of ask for and it seems to be still going strong. The numbers havn't been there for me, but the size is the best I have seen in years. The last two days I was able to get limits, but the number of overs we went through today was a treat to say the least. We caught a total of 19 walleyes today with 10 of them being over 20 inches, most of them were over 22 inches. We had 2 fish over 25 inches. The last two days I have been pulling cranks, mostly because of the gusty NW winds. We have been using planner boards with Husky Jerks, 600 series reef runners and Lindy Shadlings. We caught most of our fish yesterday on lead core, but today they seemed to favor the boards up high in the water column. (If its white, it right) seems to still be a good game plan, but other colors like perch and gold did see some action. One of the boats that fished with us today did catch a big salmon, which was a great thing to see. Hopefully this is sign of things to come.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Wednesday, July 14, 2010
Today, although the winds were howling again here in the great plains of South Dakota, was a great day on the water. Today was the "Senior Day" which is put on by the South Dakota Walleye Classic. Eighteen volunteers took over 40 seniors from Walworth County and surrounding areas out on a beautiful, but blustery Lake Oahe! The boats launched at Swan Creek around 9:30 this morning and even though the wind made fishing conditions difficult, fish were still caught. The seniors and their guides toughed out the wind until just after noon and then all were invited to the wonderful Akaska Community Center for sandwiches, watermelon, salad and cake. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring less wind, so you guys can get out and enjoy the great fishing in the Swan Creek area! Thank you to all of the volunteers who donated their time to make a senior smile! Please feel free to check out some pics of some of the seniors and volunteers on our website www.oahewings.com

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Sunday, July 11, 2010
Today was probably one of the best bites of the summer in the Akaska area. I didn't talk to one boat that didn't catch fish and most that I talked to were done early with very nice limits. My father-in-law and my sister-in-law were able to catch a quality limit in less than 2 hours. This was the first time for a limit for them all year, congrats Jim and Teri, we were beginning to wonder! Our three boats all had a great day with limits and nice fish early in the day. All of our fish came from the Moreau River in the last two days and the depths ranged from 5 to12 fow. The plug bite has come on strong but the bait bite is also still very good. Bouncers with just about any lead seems to work. There were some very good reports from north of the Moreau on both sides of the lake, most of these reports came from bait fishermen, but I would guess the cranks would work there too. There definitely is more boats out than we are used to for July, but with the two ramps, good parking, and five slots to launch there has been no problem getting in and out of the water quickly in the Swan Creek area. The bite is spread out enough and strong enough that the traffic doesn't have any effect on the day. There are way more areas without boats and most of those areas seem to have fish on them too. We do have rooms available...feel free to contact us at sschilling@venturecomm.net. Another thing....mark your calendars for August 10th to the 15th. This is the South Dakota Walleye Classic and Festival! There are openings yet for both pros and cos, so you can go to www.aimfishing.com to sign up. Let's shoot for more anglers than they had in Green Bay. For all of you spectators, there is entertainment, arts in the park, bull-o-rama, ranch rodeo, and much more! Check out all the events at www.sdwalleyeclassic.com. |

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Wednesday, July 7, 2010
This morning the fishing was excellent! We had 14 quality walleyes before one o'clock....however, after that we worked pretty hard for our last two fish. This is a better bite than we had yesterday, but still many boats did well yesterday. The key is finding a pod of active fish. Yesterday, two guide boats caught some fish and today, three guide boats caught all of their fish! We had the most success in 14 to 16 fow, using bouncers and spinners, propellers, or plain hooks. We used all crawlers, but heard of some people also having success with leeches too. I am marking tons of fish, but again the key is finding those that are active. Today we found quite a few catfish mixed in with the walleyes, along with some perch, smallmouth bass and the crappies are still biting. Please feel free to email us at sschilling@venturecomm.net for a guide or any room reservations!

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Thursday, June 24, 2010
Today, I have great news to report! Over the last few days I had traveled to the Pollock area, but today I went out of Swan Creek and the bite has rebounded quicker than I had anticipated. Although, we did have a great couple of days in Pollock...not having to travel this morning, was a relief. And to catch some super healthy fish, ranging in size from too small to keep, to a couple of overs. Yesterday, there were reports of some limits being caught out here also, but today almost all of the boats that I spoke to were very happy with the fishing. We caught all of our fish in the Moreau River. If there is a down side to the bite, it is that once we left the Moreau and headed south, we did not catch anymore fish. We stayed in the Moreau until noon....most of the fish came in 4 to 13 fow. We were pulling bottom bouncers with either a spinner or a plain hook. I think today the spinner outperformed all other techniques. The bait fish have nearly disappeared from the shallow waters and the only place that I marked the bait was over 40 fow. I feel that this should be very good news for the walleye fishing in the days to come. There are still reports of lots of crappies being caught, along with some northern pike, perch and small mouth bass. We do have some rooms available for next week and over the 4th of July yet. Akaska always puts on a wonderful supper, parade and fireworks display. Please feel free to give us a call or email us to make your reservation.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Thursday, June 17, 2010
The fishing here the last week has seen a decrease in activity. An emerging small mouth bite and the crappie fishing has saved a few of the days. That is not to say that walleyes are not biting, we are getting limits but the bite has been as inconsistent as the weather pattern. The most consistent walleye fishing has been on the mouth Moreau River. But, because of the wind over the last two days, we have been unable to go searching and the forecast is wind again for tomorrow. However, Saturday is supposed to be nice and we will have an opportunity to scout some new areas. I am confident that we will have a good report after this weekend following some good weather.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Tuesday, June 8, 2010
Fishing on Lake Oahe, over the past two days, has become even more consistent. The bite is spread out and more and more boats are coming in with their limits. One of the best things that I have seen happen to Lake Oahe this year, is the explosion of the crappie fishing. We have started out the morning focusing on our walleye limit and spending the latter part of the afternoon focusing on the crappie bite. We have been catching between 20 and 30 crappies a day. The great thing is, the crappies are not alone....they are mixed right in with the walleyes, perch, northern pike and catfish. We have had plenty of overs, but most of the walleyes being caught are between 17" and 19". Most of the crappies are in the 12" to 14" range. All of our fishing has been in 12 fow or less. We still do have some openings for rooms and/or a guide for the month of June, so please free to contact us to make your reservation today!

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Saturday, June 5, 2010
The last three days we have had good fishing, but today was exceptional. We had 6 boats out of Swan Creek, mostly concentrating in the Moreau River. The bite was hot and heavy all day today. Largest fish was just over 28", with the average fish between 18" and 19". Shallow water with bottom bouncer and spinners was the standout presentation, but there was a few fish taken on crank baits also. Small walleyes and crappies will keep a person busy, but the big fish move up and limits come quick. Cover lots of water and stay away from heavy boat pressure, and the bite isn't that hard to find. There are still some rooms available for the upcoming weeks, and we will gladly point you in the right direction.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Thursday, May 27, 2010
Today on Lake Oahe, the winds were anything but calm...however, the fishing was very good! We have been fishing the past three days and have seen a steady increase in the bite. Tuesday, we worked hard for very few fish...Wednesday was better, and today brought many walleyes. The areas that seemed to have the most activity are the Bowdle beach area and the mouth of Swan Creek. Most of the fish came in 5 to 12 fow on a bouncer with a plain hook and a minnow. Some fish were caught pitching jigs and today in the wind, a bottom bouncer, spinner and crawler also worked very well. All three boats had limits today and the fish varied in size from 16" to 26", most coming in that 19" range.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Wednesday, March 17, 2010
In response to you comments and questions from my latest report...I am a little hesitant to say that the shorelines are safe because they change so rapidly. As of yesterday the conditions had improved some on the shorelines, but we are still driving our four wheelers through 16 to 18 inches of water off of the north ramp at Swan Creek. There is probably 35 feet of water before we climb on the ice, but so far we havn't had any issues. The travel on the ice with the quads has improved everyday. Last week was almost like boating, but now most of the water has seeped through and made things much more enjoyable. There are still some slush pockets but they are pretty easy to see now since I have been stuck in almost all of them. Yesterday, the bite was off in the morning, we only had one good keeper and a bunch of little ones. That doesn't mean much we probably missed an afternoon or evening run. Seems like lately we only get one or the other. Hope this helps, be safe.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Monday, March 15, 2010
Saturday had us back out of Swan Creek, fishing was very active. More walleyes were caught this week. However, the majority consisted of small mouth bass, catfish, and small perch. The fish on Saturday were found in 35 to 45 fow. We did put out set lines, but had no success with them...the fish came all on jigs. We ended up with 9 good keepers fishing from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. One of the small mouths that we caught was pushing 5 lbs. Sunday found us in the same area north of Swan Creek. The fishing was slow. We worked really hard for the 9 walleyes that were kept. I think that we would have done better if we would have moved into shallower water earlier in the day. Seven of the nine keepers were nicer fish and we found those in 14 to 18 fow. Again, all came on jigs. 3/8 oz silver jigmaster was by far the best. On Sunday, we did not catch a single small mouth after catching at least 10 the day before. We fished from noon to dark on Sunday and the best bite came right before dark in the shallow water. This morning, Monday, we were on the ice by 8 am and the fishing was good right away in the shallow waters again. We missed a couple and caught two nice keepers and then the bite died shortly thereafter. We worked until noon and keeping only two more nicer fish from the deep water (35 to 45 fow). Ice conditions are decent, however the shore line has approximately 18 inches of water and is getting deeper each day. I will try to get out over the next few days, but with the predicted warmer temps, we will see how the week progresses. If you do venture out , please be careful. |

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Thursday, March 4, 2010
Well, I made it back to the Pollock area on Monday to get my kids on the ice. Both kids were able to catch a couple of fish, but the bite had slowed considerably since Saturday. They still had a ball and were able to enjoy a great meal later at the West Pollock resort. Bob and the staff were excellent with Samantha (4) and Beau (3). They are still talking about the pizza and ice cream. The fish that did bite that day came in 45 plus fow. We were unable to move to much, but we just didn't mark the fish we had found on Saturday. On Tuesday, I went out of Swan Creek for the fifth time this winter.. I was really hoping to break the streak that I had set of being skunked everytime. And that we did, but they were not all the targeted species. Actually, very few of them were, but the action was better than I expected. We started the day with 3 huge white bass, then a 16 in sauger, more white bass, and then an 18 in smallmouth. Not your typical day ice fishing on Oahe, but the action was appreciated. We caught a couple more white bass and then a couple of catfish before we headed in at noon. We came back out at 3 o'clock and fished till dark....several more whitebass and catfish kept my kids busy all afternoon and right at dark we did catch one more 18 in sauger. We went out the last two mornings and had mixed bags again, but each day only one or two walleyes/saugers were caught. Most of these fish were caught jigging in 35 - 40 fow. We did not try set lines, but I believe that it would have worked. I am just enjoying fishing fifteen minutes from home no matter what kind they are. It is really hard getting used to not seeing another fishermen, track, old ice holes or any other sign of life in an area that normally gets a lot of traffic. Hopefully this is a good sign that the bite is moving down river a little, but i'm not sold quite yet. If I had to catch walleyes, I would still head to the West Pollock area.

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Sunday, February 28, 2010
This past weekend we had a group of fisherman from North Dakota. The fish on the upper middle portion of Lake Oahe were consistent throughout the day on Friday. We ended up with our limit for our party of 16. Saturday started with a slow bite, but as the morning progressed the fishing improved and we did end up with a nice bunch of fish by noon. Our group was on the road right after lunch with a great bunch of fish. Travel conditions were a little better on the ice, but the snowmobiles made our lives much easier. Most of the fish this weekend seemed to have slid into a little deeper water. Most fish were caught between 35 and 50 fow. We did have a few perch and catfish mixed in with our walleyes. The size of the walleyes/saugers was very respectable. It was not uncommon to see 18 to 22 inch saugers, along with some really nice walleyes. I don't remember ever catching saugers of this quality or quantity on Lake Oahe. Again, we used mostly jigmasters. Color seemed not to matter once again. We anticipate this bite to continue for several more weeks prior to the spawn. My feeling is that the bite may be spreading more to the south, which would get us a little closer to home. Ice conditions are in great shape, so we hope to have several more good, safe weeks of ice fishing. We do have openings, so feel free to give us a call. |

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Friday, February 19, 2010
Thursday found us back on the ice on the upper middle portion of Lake Oahe. The fishing is still excellent, though we did have to move twice to get on the fish. More walleyes today, but still the majority were saugers. Average length was 15 to 18 inches, with our friend Ronnie T. catching a 22 inch sauger on his 79th birthday. One of the largest differences from 4 days ago, was that there were more fish caught in under 20 fow than over 30 fow. Still no major preference in jigs, but we used mostly Pro Tackle 3/8 oz jigmasters. Color seemed to not make a difference. Travel conditions improved on the ice, but the travel is still by far the hardest part. Will have another report beginning of next week!

Lake Oahe, Missouri River - Monday, February 15, 2010
Fishing on the middle portion of Lake Oahe was excellent over the weekend. Limits were filled within a few hours of arriving to our destination. Average size of the saugers and walleyes were 16 to 22 inches. Over two-thirds of the fish caught on Friday and Saturday were better than average saugers. A few catfish and northern pike were also caught. Presentation used was ProTackles' jigmasters, 3/8 ounce. Color of the jig did not seem to matter. Depth was 22 to 35 f.o.w., By far one of the strongest bites that I have seen all year.
